MMDH: Design Tips for Starting a Collection

You all know that I come from a long line of collectors.  My parents have gone to the antique flea market on the 1st Sunday of the month for as long as I can remember, and there was never a shortage of antique trinkets and furniture surrounding me growing up.  It is in my blood.  I love collecting old and new things that have unique characteristics, which is likely part of what led me to this residential interiors career.

I always say that if you haven't started a collection yet, today is the day... start now, and you won't regret it.  A collection doesn't necessarily mean 50 figurines from the same product line gathering dust on your living room shelves.  A collection, to me, means gathering things that make your heart sing!  Maybe they are colorful dishtowels that add interest to your daily clean-up routine; rocks you find on trips around the world; or maybe a collection means anything neutral on neutral you can find for your home.

It doesn't matter what your collection consists of, as long as it exists.  A collection of different things adds comfortable layers to your home and creates an established feeling as you walk in the door.  No matter what the collection is... the idea is that it represents you!

I don't know where to begin with my favorite collections.  They range from colorful ceramic items from all eras, to vintage toys that my parents have started to hand down... and lots of books, throw pillows, throw blankets, wool top coats, and chambray shirts to name a few :)
